It finally looks as though summer is here, well I say “summer” lightly as we haven’t had rain for more than 4 days now so that will do for us! If you have been on holiday with us recently you will be use to the phrase “liquid sunshine” which is what we have been telling people it is when they have been moaning about the weather!
The park is beginning to come alive with children and young families who have come on a fishing holiday with us or are using the park as a base for exploring and having the odd day on the lakes.
Throughout May & June the lakes were rammed each day and the matches were massive each week. The weather has been so mixed and the rain we have had at one point we thought we were just going to end up with one massive lake!
It is hard to believe that at the beginning of the season the lakes looked so bare as now it looks like a jungle out there, especially these last few weeks the foliage seems to have burst into life and the boys have been doing their best to pop out on to the lakes with the strimmers to cut the bushes back.
We have recently had two really successful festivals here firstly, with a new sponsor; we had the Gaymers Virgins festival aimed more towards club anglers. The festival numbers went back up to 72 this year and was a sell out, although the lakes fished harder with every peg in it was a great week and our champion this year was Alan Hall, as the festival winner Alan will be unable to fish the festival next year but with his invitation in hand back to the Preston Innovations festival in October he has high hopes for the future. Our other recent festival was the Walls Summer Solero ladies festival; the “summer” aspect was a real joke as these ladies had to fish in some of the worst July conditions we have ever seen!
I have known chaps pull out of matches because of conditions not as bad as it was but we hold out hats up to these brave girls who sat on their boxes being battered by strong winds and rain for most of the time. This is the fifth year of the festival and the best weights we have seen so far, England ace Wendy Locker took the title for her third time in the five years. Both of the dates for these festivals have been set for 2009 and we are especially excited as we have a few new lady anglers booked on the festival already.
Our current News-reel magazine mini update has recently been posted out to over eight thousand of our customers so look out for that one when it lands on your door step, if you haven’t received one please give us a shout and we will get one out in the post for you and if you have received it let us know what you think as all your suggestions are welcome.
The fishing in Cornwall suffered a blow recently when khv was discovered at Gwinear one of out local lakes, this is not only bad news for our local anglers but also for our regular anglers who often fish the matches and of course as we use that lake for our big festivals.
I know Charlie is devastated by this but he is now doing his best to rectify the situation and has already started work on the lakes to get itself back to its former self. So far we (touch wood) have been lucky here at White Acres and have escaped the outbreaks of this disease that has hit other areas of the country but we are not foolish enough to think we are invincible so we cannot state how important it is to dry your nets and encourage all anglers to make drying your nets out and not putting them in until ten minutes before the whistle not only part of your routine here at White Acres but at all UK fisheries.
The work is coming along nicely at another new local lake, with Trewaters nearly in its final stages of completion. When these lakes open it will be a massive benefit to out guests especially the match angler as we intend to introduce matches there exclusively for residents and to bring back the Saturday open match using that venue.
Keep your eyes on the website for the latest progress report. The start of the school holidays and the recent sunny weather has seen many of our owners join us in the last week or so, there has been a steady stream of owners on park throughout the year but now is the time those with children will be spending a week or six with us!
The owners’ development areas are now all fully completed and on the whole site there are only six plots left for sale,
2 plots on each of the Sycamore Forest, Foxglove Meadow and Oak forest sites. If you are thinking of snapping up one of these last few remaining sites just give Natalie, Kate or Peter a ring on (01726) 862 111.
Although the park is busy, August is one of the quietest months for the fishery team and it is a good job too as we will need to save up some energy for September when the groups of anglers return to the park.
September is one of our busiest months and is nearly fully booked and we will be back to massive matches, it is no rest for the wicked as straight after that we head in to our Autumn festivals that comes to a finale with our £25,000 Parkdean Masters, where our current champion Des Ship will hand over his title to another lucky angler or can he possibly retain the title for a second year?
As you might have noticed the web site has a slightly new look to it, keep looking out for more updates coming soon. Once again thanks for visiting our site and keep on checking back with us for more match reports and fishery news.
