POLLAWYN
is perhaps the most well known of all the White Acres lakes being
one of the original pools, and scene of many a good catch down
the years. An unusual
shaped 55-peg lake with three arms and an open water area plus
islands Pollawyn can be a demanding water at times but a very
rewarding one too.
These days pellets play
an important part in a successful day on ‘Polly’ with
banded pellet fished shallow working well over regular loose
fed pellets. With the match fishing pressure lifted
it provides arm-aching pleasure angler action yet it’s
not all big carp. Fantastic roach sport can be had from virtually
every swim if you feed casters or maggots on a little and often
basis and fish no more than 6 metres out. Expect plenty of bream,
skimmers, some tench and the odd very big perch too.
Don't
forget your worms either, they can be a great alternative bait. The
High Bank is always popular with regular visitors and it’s
not hard to see why. When News Reel visited we stumbled across
Mick Robins down from Swindon playing a nice carp on the pole. Mick like so many anglers was enjoying success
on banded pellet up in the water catching carp after carp. Yet
the most noticeable thing was the amount of families fishing together,
father, mother, son and daughter groups were dotted around the
lake.
One such family,
the Newman’s from Sheffield were all having a go. Dad Les
had enjoyed success on the feeder before our cameras arrived and
had to rely on son John to catch a fish for us! It wasn’t
just the fellers having a go as mum Tracey and daughter Heidi were
all fishing.David Reeves a CNC operator from Rugeley,
Staffs. was enjoying a carp haulin’ session on peg 21 with
corn and pellet while in the 50s another family the Lindleys
from Doncaster were having a great time.
In the low numbers Warrington
based George and Tom Culling were still thinking about their
200 lb joint haul at Bolingey the previous day while it was
nice to see the Pittaways from Birmingham, Rose, Bernard and
Linda, all enjoying themselves. So it’s far from being about serious match fishing with
the pleasure angler coming first on ‘Polly’.
The feature
packed lake offers plenty of nooks, crannies and fish holding areas
for truly exciting angling and with carp to double figures, bream
to a slab-sided 5 lb, tench topping 5 lb, perch to 3 lb and crucians
to 3 lb plus hoards of roach, hybrids and skimmers it’s not
too hard to keep your float dipping under.
Depths range from 3 feet in the margins
to 8 feet off the high banks. Careful plumbing is needed as
some pegs have shallow bar in them and finding these is often
the key to success. The contrasting nature of this lake calls for a versatile approach
with most pole and running line styles of fishing all effective
in the right swim. Big 100 lb weights are not uncommon so strong
tackle must be used. No 14 or 16 elastic with 4 lb to 6 lb hook
length. You could easily enjoy your best ever days angling here
- many anglers have!
