In fact we have caught more fish on them in the past two years than anything else yet not many anglers use them. Loose feeding regularly while fishing with two or three maggots on the hook while fishing the waggler set much shallower than the depth of the lake is an
excellent approach for carp.
If you are worried about the expense of loose feeding lots of maggots try the big waggler. Patterns like Will Rasions Daiwa Catch Up design create a splash when they hit the water, that fish associate with food. When they arrive the only bait they will find is the three maggots on the hook!
Fishing the pole shallower than the depth of the swim is also good but if the maggots draw in too many roach try feeding small cubes of meat but still use three red maggots on the hook. The maggots are more durable to missed bites than pieces of meat!
Three red maggots on the hook while legering with a groundbait feeder is deadly and effective as is the sticky maggot feeder.
Create sticky maggots by coating them with sticky maggot powder which has the effect of making them tacky so you can squeeze them together.
You can then plug a cage feeder with the maggots instead of groundbait - excellent when casting to the margins of an island.
Maggot Care Tips
- Clean off skins,dead maggots and other unwanted debris by passing the maggots through a maggot riddle.
- Sieve off the old maize and treat them to
a handful of fresh maize
- Keep fresh maggots separate from older ones, the bigger ones are better for the hook
- Before adding sticky maggot powder
ensure they are thoroughly clean,
sieve off all the maize
- Keep your maggots cool, use a cool bag
and remember to replenish the icepacks
