SPLASH! Steve Conroy gets a soaking from a Gwinear carp on day 1 of the Drennan Super League Final
SPLASH! Steve Conroy gets a soaking from a Gwinear carp on day 1 of the Drennan Super League Final
How was that for a Drennan Super League Final? The practice week went to plan with all the teams having an equal amount of practice time on each water. I see so many finals fished out before the event by too much practicing with keepnets, by structuring the practice it made for a great final. Team favorites Daiwa Dorking were always going to be hard to beat, but all the teams were up for it. As predicted day 1 and Dorking took top honors scoring 53 points droping 7 points for a total of 46. Maver Barnsley Blacks were close on their

heels with 47 points dropping 3 for a total of 44 points. Daiwa Trentmen 3rd scoring 46 points dropping 4 with 42 points. And Drennan North West were still not out of it with 41 points, Thatchers at that point decided that with only 34 points all was lost and decided to win the drinking contest that night. The match was great with the lowest section winning weight being 50lb and nine 100lb plus weights the best being 163lb.
Day 2 And Thatchers team plan was to go for it but that wasn't the case on the day. As a team we soon realized that the match was going to be harder than predicted. Daiwa Dorking and Maver Barnsley Blacks,
take it easy approach was working and both teams started to pull away. I was last in the section with one hour to go with only eleven fish in the net but by then I had fed three quarters of a kilo of worm and a tin of corn so a decision to cut all feed out was made very quickly. I was in good company with Will Raison on the next peg only having 17 fish at the same time. The gentle approach worked as I pulled back and finished second behind Dennis White. Daiwa Dorking are always going to be hard to beat but Maver Barnsley nearly did it, Thatchers were delighted to finish fourth above Drennan North West and only two points behind Daiwa Trentmen it just goes to prove that sometimes the under dogs have their day. I would like to finish by putting the final into context, all the teams came together for a week's holiday, they dined together, drank together and partied together. All the top anglers helped other teams out never holding back, I am sure that all the teams learnt a bit more. The Irish were great company, first in the shop every morning and last of the lakes in the evening, the team had five of their anglers had never caught a carp before, but they tell me that Dorking are now in their sights.
