Keenets
Festival 2006 |
|
 |
 |
There is no rest for the wicked as we head into our 5th and final spring festival. Keenets is our longest running festival and once again it looks like this year will be another cracking event. The weekend prior to the festival has been great fingers crossed this nice weather will remain for the week. We shall try our best to keep you updated daily on the festival goings on and the top 20 each day. Keep checking the site for daily updates and read on to find out how the first day of the festival went.
Day One
It was a stunning morning as the anglers waited outside the club for the first draw. The festival sections had been independently drawn prior to the anglers arrival so all guys have had the chance to check out their competition, there were the usual moans and groans about the sections (well we wouldn’t expect any less really, not mentioning any names! – only joking gents!) as well as the anticipation of a great week of match fishing ahead.
At the draw all the relevant instructions were given so we’ll soon know if anyone wasn’t listening! Then it was ready to go.The weather stayed nice all day only clouding over slightly later on in the day – here is how the lakes fished and read on to see how the top twenty stands at the end of day one.
'A' Section - Pollawyn
The match lake was the venue for A section on the first day of the festival. In recent matches, festivals and pleasure sessions the lake has been producing some great weights so there are high hopes all round. In general the lake fished really well with surprised weights and section wins coming from unexpected pegs. Judging by the weigh sheets the fish in the lake have started to move around a bit and we are also seeing top weight carp and decent weighing skimmers. The lake win today went to Steve Pearson on peg 15, Steve fished pellet on the bomb tight across to the island and had a great haul of carp giving him a lake winning weight of 121lb 3oz. Second on the lake went to Kieron Rich with 99lb 6oz, Kieron had a great results from his peg (31) and caught plenty of carp and some bonus skimmers both on the waggler with pellet. Dean Cherrington took third from peg 25 on the high bank, Dean caught most of his carp shallow with pellet on the waggler and also caught a nice net of skimmers on the pole at 14meters with meat and pellet giving him a final weight of 96lb 1oz. The next biggest weight on the lake was 91lbs, Richie Hull caught this on peg 1, Richie caught 42lbs of carp on the pole down the edge under the tree and over 40lbs of skimmers down the middle. Tim Green field on high bank 27 had the surprise of his life when he hooked and landed an 18lb catfish!
Section Winners
Steve Pearson 9 Points 121lb 3oz
Dean Cherrington 9 Points 96lb 1oz
Richie Hull 9 Points 91lb
Jamie Hall 9 Points 56lb 15oz
'B' Section - Twin Oaks/Acorn/Trelawney
There was a last minute change to this section and we introduced Acorn instead of Twin Oaks high numbers as Acorn has been fishing really well and we felt it would compete better with Trelawney and Twin Oaks low numbers. The match today proved this was a top idea as first, second and third all came from different lakes. The winning weight came from Mark Plevin on Twin Oaks peg 2, Mark fished at 14.5 meters on the pole shallow with pellet and also down the edge for a top catch weighing 154lb 1oz. Simon Fry on Trelawney peg 12 took second with 111lb 6oz, Simon caught shallow on the waggler with pellet. On Acorn peg 18 Darren Walters took third with 92lb 4oz, Darren caught down the edge at 3 meters with meat and down the middle at 10 meters on pellet. Phil Henry on Twin Oaks peg 10 had the next best weight of the section with 90lb 15oz.
Section Winners
Mark Plevin 9 Points 156lb 1oz
Simon Fry 9 Points 111lb 6oz
Darren Walters 9 Points 92lb 4oz
Mick Dagnall 9 Points 64lb 4oz
'C' Section - Gwinear
At first we were not sure we would use this lake for the festival as previously it had been fish hard and was becoming “peggy” but as the lake had experienced a two week break from the pressure of festivals and with an increase in temperature we felt that the lake would perform well. Our judgment proved right by looking at the weights today (lets just hope it stays this way for the rest of the week). The lake was won by Dave Lewis on peg 31, Dave caught on worm and caster on the pole down the edge and at 14 meters he had a final weight of 124lb 8oz. Rick Dennis took second with 82lb 6oz, Rick was on peg 27 and caught on banded pellet down the edge. Third went to Tony Curd on peg 40 who had 81lb 9oz, Tony caught on pellet shallow. Richard Day had the next best weight on the lake with 81lb 4oz, Richard caught down the edge on the top four with pellet.
Section Winners
Dave Lewis 9 Points 124lb 8oz
Tony Curd 9 Points 81lb 9oz
Richard Day 9 Points 81lb 4oz
Paul Homewood 9 Points 32lb 12oz
D Section Porth
As the temperature gets better so the fishing seems to at Porth, the lake is packed with small skimmers & roach; plenty of these were caught yesterday. Terry Molloy took the lake win with 20lb 9oz; Terry was on peg 72 and caught on the feeder. Darren Cox on peg 75 took second with 18lb; Darren caught all roach on casters at 4 meters. Third went to Graham Ford, Graham caught on the pole & on the feeder both with worm from peg 33 and had a final weight of 14lb 8oz. Chris Davis had the next best weight on the lake with 12lb 15oz, Chris was on peg 85 and caught lots of small fish all on the pole at 10 meters with single caster.

Chris Davis 9 Points 12lb 5oz
Steve Cooke 9 Points 10lb 13oz

Rob Wooton on peg 23 took the lake win with a whopping 141lbs, Rob caught on meat and pellet in the margins. Second went to Sean Huggins on peg 35, Sean caught on meat shallow ending up with a weight of 136lb 4oz. So two down and three to go, watch this space for the results after day three – cant Simon hang on in there. See you tomorrow!
Day Three
It was another fine day down here in Cornwall with blue skies and sunshine, the fish are still feeding well and despite a bit of sun burn most of the anglers enjoyed their day.
This is the mid way points of the festival and a vital time of the competition, those anglers that have already secured good points need to hang in there and those that have had a rocky start to the week need to make sure they up their game and pick up some section wins.
Read on to see how today’s matches have panned out and effected they overall result.
'A' Section - Gwinear
The lake is still holding up well to the pressure and the increase in temperature has definitely improved the weights we are seeing compared to the previous two festivals, although there have been a few blow outs today most of the weights seem fairly consistent and there are some great winning weights. The lake was won by Gavin Clarke on peg 31, Gavin fished the long pole to the island with pellet for an impressive net of fish weighing 131lb 10oz. Second on the lake went to Harry Billing, Harry was on peg 7 and finished with a weight of 104lb 4oz. Steve Sanders took third with 101lb 10oz, Steve was on peg 24 and caught shallow on pellet and down the edge with worm. Wow! Another 5 100lb plus weights came from Bolingey today – can this lake get any better? The back up weights were great to with only a handful of anglers not catching over 40lb. The lake winner today was Tony Curd – Tony was aiming to catch his first ever ton weight from this festival but today he came closer to 200lb! He finished with an impressive weight of 176lb 12oz; Tony was on peg 36 and had over 40 carp that were caught on the shallow pole with pellet at 13 meters. Mark Harris on peg 20 took second with 120lb 11oz, Mark caught shallow on the pole with pellet. 'D' Section - Pollawyn
The fish are still feeding well and judging by the conversation on the banks the weights would be double even triple if the anglers had not lost as many fish as they caught! Although not able to compete with overall weights the arms are producing well and it is a proper battle for section points. Darren Cox wins the lake today with 200lb 7oz (I think he might be using a chunk of his winnings paying out on his bets as he was convinced he didn’t have over 200lbs – so 7oz has cost him a few £££’s!!) Darren was on peg 16 and caught all carp on the feeder with pellet. Terry Molloy on peg 22 finished second with 167lb 12oz, Terry had over 35 carp that were caught up the water on the waggler with pellet. Third went to Martin Howard on peg 17, Martin caught on the waggler tight across to the island with pellet for a weight of 129lb 12oz. Our recent junior festival winner Miles Day had the next best weight on the lake with 99lb 1oz, Miles was on peg 15 and caught shallow on the waggler tight across to the island.
Section Winners
Darren Cox 9 Points 200lb 7oz
Graham Ford 9 Points 93lb 15oz
Paul Carnwell 9 Points 84lb 5oz
Steve Cooke 9 Points 69lb 2oz
'E' Section - Twin Oaks/Acorn/Trelawney

Tim Rowe on Twin Oaks peg 14 took second with 104lb, Tim caught shallow on the waggler with pellet. All change again! No one has had maximum 3 section wins and the points are remarkably tight, this one is definitely going to down to the wire and those dropped results are going to play a massive part in the overall placing.Come back and see how day fours action has affected the overall result.
Day Four
Well it was another exciting day; again some great weights were spread across the sections with more fish being caught each day.
The weather was amazing today (although not for those drawn on shaded pegs!) with blue skies and sunshine – a little too much for some, after sun anyone??
This is the penultimate day of the festival, has everyone done enough to secure their place as we head into the final? Read on for the catch and section results of day four.
'A' Section - Porth
If you come to the lake at this time of year and expect to catch huge bags of fish then you are in the wrong place! The lake is packed with small silver fish & skimmers, worm and maggot dominate the choice of bait and the trick is for you to land the fish before the pike realise you are pinching their dinner! Harry Billing won the lake today with 21lb 10oz; Harry was on peg 81 and caught on the pole with worm, caster & maggot. Second went to Kieron Rich on peg 72, Kieron caught on both the pole and the waggler with from for a total weight of 20lb 8oz. Phil Ringer on peg 88 was third with 18lb 4oz, Phil caught on the feeder with red maggots. With 15lb 9oz Riche Hull had the next best weight on the lake caught from peg 37 on the feeder.
Section Winners
Harry Billing 9 Points 21lb 10oz
Kieron Rich 9 Points 20lb 8oz
Richie Hull 9 Points 15lb 9oz
Steve Sanders 9 Points 12lb 11oz
'B' Section - Bolingey
An incredible ten 100lb plus weights came from Bolingey today – that’s a lot of fish! Pellet again is the predominant bait either on the pole or feeder. The weights have been amazing throughout the week and today was no different, Paul Greenwood won the lake with 180lb 14oz, Paul was on peg 20 and caught shallow on the waggler with pellet & also down the margins with worm. Second went to Mark Plevin on peg 45, Mark weighed in with a very respectable 136lb 14oz. Derek Willan on peg 33 took third, Derek caught shallow on the pole with pellet for a final weight of 125lb 8oz. It was a close battle and Mick Dagnall just missed out on framing with his 124lb 8oz, Mick was on peg 7 and caught at 5 meters on meat.
Section Winners
Paul Greenwood 9 Points 180lb 14oz
Derek Willan 9 Points 125lb 8oz
Mick Dagnall 9 Points 124lb 8oz
Paul Sheehan 9 Points 105lb 4oz
'C' Section - Pollawyn
The weights on Pollawyn were so close today, there were 5 ton plus weights and 4 pegs in a row all weighed in at 80 – 83lbs, there were a lot of pound coins being exchanged over bets. The lake win came from Steve Perham on peg 17, Steve caught on the method that is mostly dominating the big catches – waggler shallow with pellet, Steve finished with a weight of 194lb 6oz. Second went to Nick Dean with 162lb 3oz, Nick caught (wait for it!) shallow on the waggler with pellet from peg 26. On the point at peg 20 Paul Selvedge picked up third with 128lb 4oz, Paul caught on the pole up in the water at 16 meters with pellet. Mark Harris was at first not happy with his draw of peg 52 and soon christened it “compost corner” but as he started to catch his tune started to change and he weighed in with an impressive 117lb caught on the pole down the edge with meat. Mark made a bold statement saying if he did not win his section from that peg then he would give up fishing – all way going well until we got round to Steve Pomerys peg (36) were Mark nervously looked on as a big net of fish was hiked out of the lake but managed a sigh of relief as the final weight was read out – 91lbs!
Section Winners
Steve Perham 9 Points 194lb 6oz
Nick Dean 9 Points 162lb 3oz
Mark Harris 9 Points 117lb
Chris Jenkinson 9 Points 66lb 10oz
