Ladies Walls Summer Solero Festival 2008

Well this festival used to be the Walls “summer” Solero Ladies festival but we are again definitely not seeing the “summer” aspect to it! In the days running up to the festival we have seen solid rainfall from Friday. These female anglers must be totally dedicated to fish in the conditions that we have been forecast. The numbers of festival entrants have been up and down from 24 down to 16, this year we nearly ended up with more than last year with 20 anglers confirmed but due to unforeseen circumstances 2 of the ladies we unable to make it so we were back down to 18 – the same number as last year!

Day One
The weekend weather has been really grim and only a few of the bravest anglers have been out there practising. Twin Oaks was used in the festival last week and fished well even though all the pegs were in, this week with the pegs being spread out a bit we have got high hopes for some top weights.

A section Twin Oaks 2-9
It was a great start for Georgina Weir fishing her first White Acres ladies festival picking up the lake win today. Georgina was on peg 5 and caught on the bomb and pellet over to the far bank for a weight of 55lb 10oz. Heather Dewey was second with 46lb 10oz, Heather was on peg 8 and caught some on the pole but most of her weight came from catching on the bomb and pellet. Val Hillier had the next best weight, Val was on peg 6 and had a weight of 16lb 8oz comprising of carp and a few skimmers caught on the pole with pellet.

Section Winner: Georgina Weir 6 points peg 5 55lb 10oz

B section Twin Oaks 11-18
A cracking weight from the England ladies star Wendy Locker taking the lake win with 71lb 6oz, Wendy was on peg 11 and caught on the bomb to the far bank with pellet and meat. Louise Brittle on peg 14, Louise weighed in with 35lb 3oz. The next best weight came from Jenny Drew on peg 17, Jenny caught mostly on the feeder for a weight of 35lb.

Section winner: Wendy Locker 6 points peg 11 71lb 6oz

C section Twin Oaks 23-33
With only one section on the high numbers the anglers have plenty of room, the lake winners today was Denise Hudgell, Denise was on peg 27 and caught mostly on the bomb and pellet and also had the odd fish on the pellet waggler for a weight of 53lb 13oz. Sandy Maney was second on the lake, Sandy had a weight of 38lb 3oz caught on the bomb and pellet from peg 31. The next best weight on the lake came from Helen Dagnall on peg 29, Helen caught on the pole at 13 meters and pellet on the bomb to the far bank for a weight of 36lb 6oz.

Section winner: Denise Hudgell 6 points peg 27 53lb 13oz

So that was the first day of the festival and lets see how our overall leader board looks.

  Name Weight Points
1st

Wendy Locker

71lb 6oz 6 points
2nd Georgina Weir 55lb 10oz 6 points
3rd Denise Hudgell 53lb 15oz 6 points

10th Gaynor Mills 36lb 3oz 3 points

So even though the weather is not on our side the weights are still good and it has been a great start to the festival, the ladies up in the top spots must be pleased with their first day and can only hope to pick up some high points again tomorrow.

Day Two
Well anyone who fishes today really deserves a medal as the weather is abysmal! The ladies have showed their dedication by taking to the banks today all aiming for that top position, lets see how the fishing was on day two and if we have any change on out leader board.

A section Twin Oaks 11-18
The weights today were really consistent across this section today but Heather Dewey put in that extra effort to take the lake win with 50lb 6oz, Heather was on peg 15 and caught on the pole on the inside with pellet. Second on the lake was Georgina Weir, Georgina caught on the bomb & pellet and on the pole in the margins with pellet and maggot from peg 18 for a weight of 47lb 7oz. Section winner: Heather Dewey 6 points peg 15 50lb 6oz

B section Twin Oaks 23-33
Great weights again from this section today with Charlene Stevens taking the very impressive lake win with 74lb 11oz; Charlene was on peg 31 and caught on the pole in the margins with corn & pellet. Wendy Locker was second on peg 25, Wendy caught on the bomb with meat and pellet for a weight of 66lb 11oz. The next best weights came from Jenny Drew on peg 33, Jenny had a weight of 58lb 2oz caught on the bomb with meat.

C section Twin Oaks 2-9
Today we have seen the best weight of the festival so far with Denise Hudgell taking her second lake win with a whopping 80lb 2oz, Denise was on peg 2 and caught on the bomb & pellet and on the pole at 5 meters with worm. Helen Dagnall was second; Helen was on peg 8 and caught on the pellet waggler and then bomb & Pellet. Sandy Maney had the next best weight with 67lb 11oz, Sandy caught on the bomb with pellet from peg 9.

Section winner: Denise Hudgell 6 points peg 2 80lb 2oz

So that was day two and this is how our leader board stands.

  Name Weight Points
1st

Denise Hudgell

133lb 15oz 12 points
2nd Wendy Locker 138lb 1oz 11 points
3rd Georgina Weir 103lb 1oz 11 points
4th Heather Dewey 97lb 11 points
5th Helen Dagnall 108lb 10oz 9 points
6th Sandy Maney 105lb 14oz 9 points
7th Charleen Stevens 99lb 5oz 9 points
8th Jenny Drew 93lb 2oz 8 points
9th Louise Brittle 60lb 7oz 8 points
10th Val Hillier 53lb 10oz 7 points

So Denise leads the pack with a perfect score, there is one day left in the festival and we only hope the ladies dry out in time for their final match.

Day Three
The final day of the festival has come round so quick, these past three days have flown by. Today there has been an added bonus for the anglers and that is it has finally stopped raining! Going into the final day it is only Denise on maximum points and hoping to retain her 2007 title but as we all know anything can happen on a White Acres festival, there are tight points across the top 10 and amazing back up weights so I’m sure the ladies will be going all out to fish their best match possible today. So who has emerged as our Solero ladies champion 2008, read on for the latest news.

A section Twin Oaks 23-33

Two ladies decided not to fish the festival today and this was one section that was missing a lady, these high numbers of Twin Oaks have consistently been producing some great weights throughout the festival and today was no exception and with an extra blank peg in the section the weights were set to be some of the highest we have seen. Sharon White was our lake winner today on peg 33, Sharon caught on the feeder with pellet for a weight of 73lb 7oz. Second on the lake was Georgina Weir, Georgina was on peg 27 and weighed in with 54lb 14oz caught on the bomb & pellet and in the margins on the pole with corn. On peg 23 Sue Arkell had the next best weight, Sue weighed in with 50lb 6oz caught on the pellet waggler.

Section winner: Sharon White peg 33 6 points 73lb 7oz

B section Twin Oaks 2-9
B was the other section missing an angler today and provided an extra advantage for our lake winner Wendy Locker, with a blank peg next to her, but with Wendy’s expertise in angling this would have not made much of a difference to her. Wendy took the win with an impressive weight of 88lb 5oz she was on peg 6 and caught on the scud with pellet. Jenny Drew was second on the lake, Jenny caught on the bomb with meat from peg 8 for a weight of 64lb 3oz. The next best weight came from Charlene Stevens on peg 3 with a weight of 40lb 9oz, Charlene caught 5 fish early on the bomb and then caught in the margins on corn.

Section winner: Wendy Locker peg 6 6 points 88lb 5oz

C Section Twin Oaks 11-18
This section of pegs have also been producing some amazing weights this week and with our current festival leader fishing this section today it will be an exciting match. The lake winner today putting in an excellent performance was Sandra Maney, Sandra caught on the banded pellet in the margins and on the bomb with pellet from peg 11 for a weight of 88lb 14oz. Denise Hudgell dropped a point today by getting second on the lake, Denise was on peg 14 and weighed in with 73lb 4oz caught in the bomb with pellet and on the pole with worm & paste. With Denise missing out on the lake win the festival has become an open book and will be determined by weight rather than points. Helen Dagnall had the next best weight on the lake with 45lb 7oz; Helen was on peg 18 and caught on the pellet waggler and on the pole in the margins with pellet.

Section winner: Sandra Maney peg 11 6 points 88lb 14oz

So that was our 2008 ladies festival and here are the final results.

98lb 13oz 11 points

So England ace Wendy Locker wins the White Acres Ladies festival for the third time in the five years that we have been running it. We have had the best weights this year that this festival has ever seen, in 2007 the total sum of weight weighed in over the 18 anglers was 962lb, this year also with 18 anglers we have smashed that figure and more that doubled the weight recorded with a staggering 2107lbs weighed in by the girls over 3 days! It has not been the best weather conditions we could have asked for and if any of the ladies expected to get a bit of a tan from fishing they have been out of luck as we have had more “liquid sunshine” than anything else!!

The final day of the festival was really exciting and because of the closeness of weight and points no one was 100% sure of the final results so during the evening presentation there were a few surprises.

If you speak to the anglers I’m sure they will agree with us that it has been a great festival and virtually everyone who fished last year has improved their results.

The date for the 2009 festival has already been set and the exciting news that it will be a 4-day festival next year. The date is confirmed as week commencing 4th July and if you want any info please give me a call on 01726 862 526, 9 people have booked on already.

Cheers, Kirsty
