Jon Whincup capped an unforgettable year in match fishing by being crowned the 2016 Parkdean Resorts Masters champion after an extraordinary contest. The 42-year-old angling consultant from Peterborough claimed his first ever title on Jenny’s Lake, beating one of the strongest line-up’s ever assembled for the final to take home the £25,000 first prize. He blew away a field containing two-time Masters champions Des Shipp, Steve Ringer, Lee Kerry, Andy Leathers, Jamie Wilde, plus a host of internationals and match fishing stars to win the event.

“It’s been a surreal year. I can’t really explain it. I’ve put an awful lot of work into my fishing and this just goes to show that the hard work is paying off,” said Jon, who drew unfavoured peg 11 on Jenny’s. “I didn’t really fancy the peg when I drew it but when I realised there were a few fish there, I knew I had a chance. I had a slow start – but when they switched on, the bites just kept coming. “Fishing the Masters is always special because of the quality of the people you’re against in the final. To win it means everything,” he said.

At the draw, former champion Steve Ringer had been favourite after he pulled out peg 16. But bright sunshine and a chilly easterly wind seemed to force the Jenny’s carp to seek refuge behind the lake’s central island, away from the former feeder World Champion.Phil Canning, on peg 18, was the early pace setter, landing several large carp in the first hour on waggler tactics. Ben Fisk on peg 3, where Andy Geldart had won the title 12 months earlier, was another contender, catching smaller F1 carp and caraccio.

But as the match progressed, Jon managed to get the carp to feed on peg 11. With an hour left, it was clear he was pulling away from the chasing pack.
His final total was an exceptional 92lbs 14oz. Ben managed second with 47lbs 5oz, with Phil in third on 42lbs 6oz. Jon’s victory came four weeks after he won one of angling’s other top prizes, the £70,000 ‘Match This’. With other festival successes in Cornwall, his total match winnings for 2016 exceed £100,000.
